A high-voltage strip carries line voltage along the tape. Run length and cut interval

Because the tape is not fighting voltage drop across a low DC supply, a high-voltage run can generally cover a long distance from one connection point. That is the strongest argument for the format: perimeter runs on a warehouse, a long fence line, sign channels where hauling a driver to the middle of the run is impractical.

The trade appears at the scissors. Cut intervals on line-voltage tape are usually measured in feet rather than inches, because the internal circuit is arranged in long segments. Low-voltage tape is generally divisible far more often, and some COB products are made to be cut at very short intervals. Neither statement is universal, so read the cut interval published for the exact product before you plan a layout around it.

Dimming and control

This is where the two formats diverge most for anyone building a finished interior. Low-voltage strip is dimmed by the driver, by a wall dimmer matched to that driver, or by a low-voltage controller placed after it, and the compatibility is documented as a chain from dimmer through driver to strip. Verify every link in that chain before promising a client smooth control, and keep methods separate rather than stacking a controller behind a phase cut dimmer.

Line-voltage tape depends on whatever its own circuitry supports. Some products accept a compatible line-voltage dimmer, some are switch-only, and a rectified supply behaves differently at low levels than a DC one. Treat dimming as a product-specific question you confirm in writing rather than an assumption about the category.

Safety, code, and who does the work

This is the part that matters more than any spec. A line-voltage strip is a line-voltage product along its entire length. Its terminations, end seals, cuts, junction boxes, and any dimmer are electrical work governed by the manufacturer's instructions, local code, and the NEC where it applies, and that work belongs to a licensed electrician. Being comfortable with low-voltage tape does not qualify anyone for it.

Low-voltage systems move the conversion into a driver, which means the tape you handle in a cabinet or a cove is DC. The line-voltage side does not disappear; it moves to the driver's supply connection, and a hardwired driver or J-box installation is still electrician work in most cases.
