How Far Can an LED Driver Be Located from the LED Strip?
An LED driver can be located a fair distance from the strip, but the low-voltage wiring between them is where distance matters most, because that is the side where voltage drop builds up. The line-voltage feed into the driver can usually run as far as normal wiring allows, but the low-voltage DC run from the driver to the strip should be kept reasonable and use appropriately sized wire, since long, thin low-voltage runs lose voltage and dim the strip. There is no single maximum distance that fits every project; it depends on the wire gauge, the current, the voltage, and how much drop you can accept.
Here is how to think about driver placement and the wiring between the driver and the strip.
Two different runs, two different rules
It helps to separate the two runs involved. On the input side, the driver connects to your electrical supply at line voltage, and that feed follows normal wiring practice and code for distance. On the output side, the driver sends low-voltage DC to the strip, and this is the run that is sensitive to distance. Low-voltage DC loses voltage over length more readily than line voltage does for the same power, so the driver-to-strip run is the one to keep short or to compensate for with heavier wire.
Because of this, the practical question is rarely how far the driver can sit from the outlet or panel, and much more often how long the low-voltage run to the strip can be before the far end dims. That answer depends on the wiring, not just the driver.
