Cut the power before anything gets damp
Switch the run off at the wall and unplug the driver, or open the circuit feeding it, before a cloth goes near the tape. A lit emitter dries a damp patch unevenly, and moisture near an open connector is not something to introduce while a circuit is live. If the driver is hardwired, sits in a junction box, or is fed through a wall dimmer, that part of the job belongs to a licensed electrician following the manufacturer instructions, local code, and the NEC where it applies. Let a run that has been lit for hours cool down first, since warm plastic marks easily.
How to clean LED strip lights: dry pass first, damp pass second
Start dry. A soft microfiber cloth, a clean brush, or a puff of compressed air lifts loose dust instead of grinding it in. Skip that step and the grit is still there when the damp cloth arrives, which is how acrylic picks up fine scratches.
Then dampen a corner of the cloth with plain water, wring it out so it is barely damp, and wipe along the run rather than across it. For greasy film, a little isopropyl alcohol on the cloth lifts what water leaves behind. Put liquid on the cloth, never on the strip, and keep it off solder pads, connector housings, and cut ends.
Solvents that craze a plastic lens
Most diffuser covers are acrylic or polycarbonate, and both react badly to aggressive chemistry. Ammonia-based glass cleaners, acetone, paint thinner, strong degreasers, and abrasive creams can etch the face or set off fine cracks that keep spreading for weeks. The crazing is permanent.
Scouring pads and stiff brushes do the same by another route. If a mark will not shift with water or isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth, it is scratching rather than dirt, and a replacement cover is the honest fix (verify the cover material on the product page before you reach for anything stronger).
Do not soak it, and dry it before switching on
An IP rating describes the strip itself, not the connectors, end caps, or driver feeding it. Water running down a lens can travel along a channel and reach a joint nobody ever sealed, so keep every cloth barely damp and never put a tap or a hose across an installed length. Give it half an hour of air afterward, longer in a cold or humid room, then sight along the cover at a low angle before restoring power.
Cleaning a strip that sits in a channel
In a profile, the cover normally snaps out, which is the easy way to reach both faces. Note which face was outward, since a frosted cover is not always symmetrical. Wipe the inner face, clear grit from the channel walls, and check the tape has not lifted off the base.
Dust settles far less readily on a run that sits inside a profile.
