How to choose LED strip brightness by application
Think in three broad tiers, set by what the light is for.
Accent and mood lighting is the lowest tier. Cove lighting, under-shelf glows, toe-kick lines, and backlighting are meant to be seen as a soft wash, not to light a work area. A lower lumen-per-foot strip usually looks better here, since too much output turns a subtle detail into a glare source.
Ambient lighting is the middle tier. This is general fill for a room, such as perimeter lighting that lifts the overall light level. It needs enough output to register across the space without becoming the primary task light.
Task lighting is the highest tier. Under-cabinet lighting over a kitchen counter, a workbench, or a vanity has to actually light a working surface, so it calls for a higher lumen-per-foot strip. Under-lighting a task area is a common regret, so lean brighter when the surface matters.

What changes the brightness you actually see
The rated output is the starting point, but the light you perceive depends on the install.
Mounting matters. A frosted lens or diffuser softens the light and can lower the apparent intensity slightly, and mounting depth changes how the light spreads. A channel is still worth using on visible runs because it helps dissipate heat and gives a cleaner line, so factor a small diffusion loss into the plan rather than choosing the dimmest strip that meets the target. Surroundings matter too. Light surfaces bounce light and make a space feel brighter, while dark finishes absorb it. Viewing distance and the color temperature you choose also change perception, since cooler tones can read as brighter than warmer ones at the same output.
How dimming changes the choice
If you plan to dim, size up. A strip that is a little brighter than your target gives you room to dial it down to the exact level you want, which is more flexible than running a dimmer strip at full output and still wishing for more. Dimming needs a compatible driver and control, so confirm that the strip, driver, and dimmer or controller work together before buying. For any hardwired driver or wall dimmer, follow the manufacturer instructions and local electrical code, and use a licensed electrician when line-voltage work is involved.
Matching brightness to a specific product
Once you know the tier, translate it into a product by reading its rated lumens per foot on the page, not from a rendering or a room shot.
