LED Channel Hotspots: Can a Channel Eliminate Them?
A channel with a diffusing lens reduces LED channel hotspots, meaning the bright spots and visible dots you see along a strip, but it does not guarantee they disappear. The aluminum housing holds the strip and the diffuser scatters the light so the beading softens, yet how well that works depends on more than the channel. LED density, channel depth, and the diffuser finish all shape the result, and the single biggest factor is usually the strip itself. A high-density or COB strip, which packs the light sources close together or into a continuous line, gives the smoothest face and does more to hide hotspots than any channel can do on its own.
That is the honest answer: a channel helps, sometimes a lot, but it is not a guarantee. Here is what actually drives visible hotspots and how to get the cleanest line.
What causes LED channel hotspots
A hotspot is the bright point directly above each diode, with a slightly darker gap between them. On a spaced-out SMD strip those points are far enough apart that your eye reads them as beads rather than a line, and the wider the spacing, the more obvious the dots. This is a property of the strip, not the channel, which is why the channel can only ever reduce the effect and not remove its cause. Viewing distance matters too: the same strip that looks beaded up close can smooth out across a room.
Three things influence how visible those hotspots stay once the strip is in a housing. The first is LED density, the number of diodes per foot, since more diodes closer together leave smaller gaps. The second is channel depth, because a deeper channel sits the strip further from the lens and gives the light room to spread before it reaches your eye. The third is the diffuser, since a frosted or opal lens scatters the light while a clear lens passes the dots straight through.
