Brightness and color for seeing clothing
A closet is a place where you judge color, so both output and color rendering matter. A medium-brightness strip gives enough light to see into a deep shelf and read the true color of a fabric. A high color-rendering strip (often described by its CRI) makes those colors look accurate, so navy reads as navy and not black. Confirm the CRI figure on the product page before you rely on it.

Control options: door and motion switching
The convenience feature that makes a closet feel finished is automatic switching, so the light comes on as you open the door and goes off when you leave. Two common approaches are a door switch and a motion or occupancy switch that responds when you step in. Control only behaves well when the parts agree, so verify compatibility across the strip, the driver, and the switch or controller before you expect clean on-off behavior. Do not mix incompatible control methods, such as a low-voltage controller and a phase-cut wall dimmer on the same circuit, unless the system documentation explicitly permits it. Treat them as separate methods.
Power options and a clean install
Match the voltage exactly: a 24V strip needs a 24V driver, never crossed with a 12V supply. Size the driver from the strip's watts per foot times your installed length, add current headroom of at least 20 percent (verify), and pick one with enough capacity. If you light several runs, wire the constant-voltage runs in parallel, not in series, so one does not dim the next.
Some closets have a nearby outlet that suits a plug-in driver, while others are better served by a hidden, hardwired supply. Tuck the driver above the shelving or in an adjacent cavity and route the low-voltage leads out of sight. Any hardwired driver connection, junction box, or wall switch at line voltage is work for a qualified electrician where local code requires it, so follow the product instructions along with your local code and the NEC where it applies.
Channels, heat, and a clean finish
An aluminum channel with a diffuser keeps the tape straight under a shelf, softens a COB run into an even band, and its aluminum helps dissipate the heat the strip produces. LED strips do generate heat in use, so a channel helps manage it while protecting the tape and improving the look. A channel reduces but does not guarantee removal of visible dots, which also depend on LED density, channel depth, and diffuser. On an exposed shelf front a diffused channel looks more finished than bare tape and keeps the source hidden.
