Why an LED Strip Buzzes When Dimmed, and Where the Noise Starts

An LED strip buzzes when dimmed because something in the chain is vibrating in step with the waveform reaching it, and four situations produce that. The dimmer and the driver were never confirmed as a working pair. The connected load sits under the minimum the dimmer needs. A component is running near the top of what it is rated for. Or the driver is reacting to a chopped waveform, since phase control removes part of every half cycle and the sharp edges left behind set magnetic parts moving.

Noise arriving with flicker or a shut-off is a wider question than this one, and why LED strips flicker, buzz or shut off takes it on. So does the reading of compatibility data, in matching a driver to a dimmer. What stays here is the sound alone, and only once the level comes down.

Find out what is actually making the sound

Almost everyone reports this as the strip buzzing, and in most low voltage systems the strip is not the source. Prove it before you spend anything.

With the level set where the noise is worst, put your ear close to three places in turn: the wall plate, the driver, and tape well away from both. A rolled sheet of paper works as a crude stethoscope. Note which is loudest, and where in the dimmer's travel the sound peaks.

Power down the circuit before you touch a terminal or a connector. A wall dimmer sits on the line voltage side, so removing one, replacing one or wiring one is a licensed electrician's job, carried out to the maker's documentation, to local code and to the NEC.

Four reasons an LED strip buzzes when dimmed

The dimmer and the driver were never verified together. Leading edge and trailing edge phase control, low voltage PWM and analog control are separate systems. A device speaking one into a driver built for another can hold together at full output and turn noisy the moment the level drops.

The load is under the dimmer's minimum. Wall dimmers state a minimum load, and a short run behind a small supply can sit below it. Below that figure, low end behavior is outside what the device was designed for.

Something is working near its limit. A supply loaded close to its rated capacity, or a dimmer close to its own, works harder than one with room to spare, and parts under strain are more likely to be heard.

The waveform itself is doing it. Phase control chops each half cycle, and those edges excite windings and other magnetic components mechanically. That vibration is the buzz, a property of the combination rather than damage to any one piece.

Working out which of the four you have

Start by taking the dimmer out of the question. Have the circuit switched at full for an evening with no dimming in play. Quiet at full and noisy only when dimmed puts the cause in the control chain.

Next, compare the connected wattage against the minimum load the dimmer publishes. Total the watts per foot for your tape, multiply by installed footage, then check that figure against the dimmer's minimum and the supply's rating (verify the published watts per foot and the current headroom guidance before you rely on either number).

Then read the model numbers rather than the symptoms. Compatibility is confirmed against what the makers publish for those exact devices, not inferred from both being labeled dimmable. If the noise runs across the whole travel and the paperwork does not list the pairing, treat it as a mismatch.

What changes the noise, and what will not

Replacing the tape almost never helps, because constant voltage strip follows whatever the driver hands it.

Where the pairing is wrong, the route forward is a combination each maker documents. Keep the methods apart either way. A smart low voltage controller and a phase cut wall dimmer should not share a circuit unless the documentation for both permits it. Supply voltage still has to suit the tape, 12V on 12V and 24V on 24V, with separate runs branching off in parallel.

There is a mechanical half too. A driver screwed flat to a hollow cabinet panel turns that panel into a soundboard. Move it to a solid surface before you replace it.

Packing foam around a humming driver backfires

The instinct is to pack something soft around a humming driver. Do not. Supplies generate heat in normal use, and wrapping one in insulation, foam or fabric traps that heat against the component you were trying to quiet. You trade a sound you dislike for a thermal problem you cannot see.

The better habit is to make noise a bench question. Wire the exact strip, supply and control device together at the length you intend to install, then run the level slowly from full to minimum with the room quiet. Anything audible shows up in two minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Is a faint hum at low levels a fault? Not automatically. Many combinations make some sound. Whether yours is normal depends on the specific devices, so read what both makers publish for that pairing before deciding anything has failed.

Why is it loudest around the middle of the travel and quiet at full? Phase control removes more of the waveform as the level drops, so the edges driving the vibration are strongest through part of the range rather than at the top.

Will a larger driver quiet it down? Only if the noise came from a supply running close to its capacity. If the cause is the dimming method, extra capacity changes nothing on its own.

Can I add load so the dimmer meets its minimum? Only where the control device documents a way to do that. Anything improvised sits outside what the maker supports.

Is the tape itself ever the source? Occasionally you can hear something at the strip, but it is uncommon. The three-point listening test settles it in under a minute.
