A remote only works up close when the receiver cannot hear it clearly, and the compromised part is almost always the receiver rather than the handset in your palm. Five conditions shorten the reach: an antenna shut inside an aluminum channel or a metal box, a gap wider than the pair is rated for, walls and cabinetry standing in the path, other wireless traffic sitting on the same band, and a battery weak enough to soften the transmission without killing it.

Map the dead zone before you blame the handset

Range gets described in feet, but it behaves like a shape. Walk the room with one finger on the same button and note every spot where the run stops answering: how far away you stood, and what sat between you and the receiver.

That shape narrows the list fast. Reach that fades evenly in every direction points at power on one side of the link, a tired cell or a shielded antenna. Reach that holds across open floor but dies through a cabinet door points at what is in the way. Range that swings by the hour points at other devices sharing the band.

Kill the power before you unplug or re-seat anything at the receiver. If reaching it means opening a wall plate, a junction box or a hardwired supply, hand that part to a licensed electrician working to the manufacturer's instructions, local code and the NEC.

Five conditions that shorten the reach when a remote only works up close

The antenna is inside metal. This leads by a wide margin. A receiver tucked into an aluminum profile or a steel back box sits inside a shield, since both metals absorb and reflect the signal it depends on.

The link is past its rated distance. Published ranges assume open space with nothing in between. A figure measured across a clear room does not survive a hallway, a floor and a closed door (verify the operating range and frequency published for your controller and handset before you plan a layout around them).

Building fabric is soaking it up. Foil-faced insulation, tile backer, mirror and stone all attenuate. Signals cross drywall fairly well and cross the metal inside a wall rather badly.

The band is busy. Doorbells, cordless phones, monitors and other small devices share the unlicensed bands. Where two systems overlap, the nearer transmitter tends to win, and yours may only win when you stand beside it.

The battery is fading. A weak cell can still light the indicator on the handset while leaving the transmitter short of output. Cheapest to rule out, and the one people test last.

Test in the room, not on the bench

Change one thing, then re-walk the same route. The room is the test rig, and a bench check tells you nothing about the wall in the middle.

Fit a fresh cell and repeat the walk. If the far corner answers again, you are finished. Next, leaving every wire connected, ease the receiver out of the channel so it hangs in open air and walk the route once more. A big jump in reach names the enclosure.

If neither step helps, switch off the wireless devices you can reach and try again in the quiet. Where the channel or address is adjustable, changing it is the cleaner test (check the procedure documented for your receiver first, because some units clear their pairings during that step).

What each cause asks you to change

Placement does most of the work. Bring the receiver out where it can hear: outside the metal, on the room side of the cabinet, and away from the driver, which makes electrical noise of its own. In a recess, a non-metallic enclosure with the antenna lead clear of the profile keeps far more of the range than a steel box.

Where raw distance is the limit, add a second zone or a second receiver near the far run instead of pressing harder. What stays fixed wherever the receiver ends up

Two wiring points hold throughout. The supply must suit the tape, 24V with 24V and 12V with 12V, and separate runs branch off the driver in parallel. Keep a smart low voltage controller off a phase cut wall dimmer circuit unless the documentation for both devices allows it.

Where installers give away range without noticing

The receiver is usually the last component anyone thinks about. Channel goes up, tape goes in, driver goes in the cabinet, and the receiver gets pushed into whatever gap is left, usually metal and usually the worst spot in the room.

Steal this from commissioning practice: before a single cover goes back on, stand at the furthest point anyone will ever use the handset from and press the button. Ten seconds there saves an afternoon of trim removal later.
