The order to work in when an LED strip won't turn on
Is the circuit live? Test the outlet with something you know works, or confirm the breaker and any switch feeding the driver. A switched outlet that someone turned off accounts for a surprising share of these calls.
Is the driver producing output? With the supply energized and the output terminals accessible, meter across them. Nothing at all means the fault is on the input side or inside the supply. A reading well below the rating usually means the driver has gone into protection, often because more strip has been added than it can carry. Total the watts per foot for every connected length, multiply by the installed footage and keep current headroom above that figure (verify the driver's published capacity and the current headroom guidance before you rely on either). Do the voltages agree? Match them: a 24V strip runs from a 24V supply, a 12V strip from a 12V supply. Crossed voltages are a common cause of a run that never lights, or lights once and never again.
Is polarity right? Single color tape is polarity sensitive, so a feed on backwards gives you nothing. Match the lead to the marked positive and negative pads. Color changing products have more conductors, and a single misplaced one usually shows as a missing color rather than total darkness, which is a useful clue in itself.
Connectors, seating and the control step
Most first-time failures happen at the first joint. In a clamp style connector the tape has to sit straight, copper landing directly on the metal contacts, with no adhesive film trapped between the two. That film insulates while looking entirely normal. Fit is per product, so match tape width and pad spacing against anything in the connectors and wires range (verify the compatible widths listed for the item you choose).
Then ask whether anything is calling for light. A controller left off, a dimmer parked at its lowest setting, a remote that lost its pairing, a receiver on the wrong zone, or a device that never rejoined the network all look identical from the floor. Bypass the control entirely: connect the strip straight to the driver on a short lead. If it lights, the fault is in the control chain and tracking down a controller fault takes it from there. Compatibility across strip, driver, controller and any wall device has to be confirmed for the specific combination rather than assumed (verify the supported strip types and load range for each part before you rely on them).
Isolating the strip itself
If the supply meters correctly, polarity is right, the joints are sound and the control is bypassed, the tape is finally a fair suspect. Bring in a short offcut of the same product and power it alone from the driver. A working offcut on a dead installation puts the fault in the installed length or its wiring.
Then split the run. Disconnect at the nearest joint, power one half at a time, and repeat on whichever half stays dark. Two or three splits narrow a long installation down fast.
Worth noting while you are in there: strips and drivers both generate heat, and a supply that shuts down and stays down is often sitting somewhere with no airflow.
