Position one: standing at the shelf with a hand on a book
At arm's length the shelf is a task surface, so the strip belongs behind the front lip, aimed back and down across the spines. The LEDClub 24V COB 200 Series low brightness strip is one low output option; confirm its watts per foot, CRI, tape width and cut interval on the product page.
Many strips can be cut at designated points and rejoined with compatible connectors or by soldering, depending on the product; the spec decides where a section can end. Pad layout and connector fit vary the same way.
Dry-fit at this stage and fix nothing. Offer a channel from the channel and lens options up against the lip, mark the fixing points in pencil, and leave the screws out until the doorway sightline below has been checked. A channel adds a mechanical fixing, helps dissipate the heat the strip makes in normal use, and reduces but does not guarantee the removal of visible dots, an outcome LED density, channel depth and the diffuser all bear on. It is never mandatory.
Position two: seated across the room, reading the wall as one object
From the sofa the shelves become a stack of lit bands, and the failure is inconsistency: one brighter, one cooler, one with a soft tail at the far end. Specify the same product, color temperature and run direction on every shelf, and order in one go.
The electrical arithmetic belongs here. Take the published watts per foot, multiply by the installed footage across all shelves, add at least 20 percent current headroom, then verify both figures on the product pages. Voltage matches end to end: a 24V strip takes a 24V driver and a 24V controller, and units sit among the constant voltage driver options. Dry-fit a single shelf and go sit on the sofa before committing the other seven.
Position three: the oblique view from the doorway
Walk in from the door and instead of lit spines you look along the shelf into the setback, where everything hidden from the front is on show: the emitter, the leading edge of the tape, an untrimmed channel end.
Fix it geometrically. Push the strip further back behind the lip, cap the run ends cleanly, and check the angle physically. Hold a piece of card on the doorway sightline, still with nothing screwed down, and see what the lip actually hides. Only when that check passes does anything get fixed. Clean the shelf underside, let it dry, follow the adhesive instructions supplied with the tape, and drive the channel screws into the marks made earlier.
Wiring, control and the checks that close out lighting a bookshelf wall from scratch
Every shelf run returns to the driver in parallel. Do not chain one shelf into the next in series, because a constant voltage system wired that way splits the voltage between sections.
Stop before you connect anything. Switch the circuit off at the breaker first. The hardwired driver, any junction box, cable running inside the wall, and the switch or dimmer box at the plate are line voltage work belonging to a licensed electrician who works to the manufacturer instructions, the local electrical code that governs the job, and the NEC where it has been adopted. Nobody should probe or test a live line voltage connection. Everything written above about 24V tape, low voltage cable and solderless connectors is not permission to open a line voltage device.
For control, a combined unit such as the EnoDim 24V driver and dimmer wall switch suits a single-color wall; a multi-zone job points to a low voltage controller. Confirm dimming compatibility across strip, driver and control device, and keep a smart controller and a phase-cut wall dimmer off one circuit unless the documentation permits it.
Commission with the shelves empty, looking for a dim tail, a color shift between shelves, or tape visible from the doorway. Load the books and look again, because a full shelf absorbs far more light than an empty one. If a shelf then reads dark, send the shelf elevations to LED Club.
