Outdoor LED Run Failing After Rain: Where the Water Actually Gets In

An outdoor LED run failing after rain is almost never the tape giving up. Water goes to the openings people made: the cut ends, the connector bodies, the spot where a lead passes through a wall or a soffit, and the driver enclosure. A strip rated IP67 is built and tested to a defined level of dust and water protection. The parts around it frequently carry a lower rating, or none anyone checked (verify the exact IP rating published for every component before you rely on it). The rating on the strip describes the strip, and a run is only as protected as its weakest part.

Before you open anything outside

Kill power at the breaker and confirm the run is dead before you touch a connection, a driver or an enclosure. Standing water and energized equipment do not belong in the same job.

Then be honest about scope. Exterior circuits, hardwired drivers, weatherproof junction boxes and any permanent outdoor connection are a licensed electrician's job, done under the maker's published instructions, under the electrical code where you live, and under NEC requirements. Low voltage tape on the far side of a driver does not change that, because the supply feeding the driver is not low voltage.

Where the water actually gets in when an outdoor LED run fails after rain

The cut end. Every cut opens the extrusion and exposes copper. A cut end not resealed with the method the manufacturer publishes for that product is an open door, and the most common entry point on a failed exterior run.

The joint. A clamp designed for indoor use has an unsealed body by definition. Water bridges two contacts a fraction of an inch apart, current takes the short path, and the run behaves oddly before anything looks damaged.

The wall or soffit penetration. A lead run through a hole that was never sealed and never given a drip loop carries water along the jacket by capillary action, straight to whatever sits inside.

The driver enclosure. Many drivers are rated for dry or damp locations only. Put one behind a fascia where wind driven rain reaches, and the fault will be at the supply rather than on the tape.

The low point. Water collects. Any dip in a horizontal run, any channel without drainage, any connector at the bottom of a loop becomes a small reservoir that never fully dries.

The timing tells you where to look

Failure during the rain and recovery a day later points to bridging: water completing a path it should not, then evaporating. Look at joints, cut ends and anything sitting in a puddle.

Failure that begins hours after the rain stops and never recovers means water got inside and stayed, usually through a penetration or into an enclosure. That one worsens with each storm.

A section that dims or shifts color while wet, then returns, is usually leakage across a connection rather than damage to the emitters. One that goes dark and stays dark after several wet cycles has generally corroded, and corrosion does not reverse.

What an exposure rated system actually needs

Match every component to the location, not just the tape. IP65 describes protection against dust and low pressure water jets, which suits covered areas and splashing. IP67 describes protection against dust and temporary immersion, the level usually specified for uncovered exterior positions. Neither rating covers a joint you left open. The supply end needs the same discipline. Choose from the LED power supplies range by enclosure rating and mounting location together, and give the unit the ventilation its documentation calls for, since drivers and strips both generate heat and need somewhere to put it. A channel used outdoors helps dissipate heat and shields the tape, but it holds water as readily as it sheds it unless the ends are treated and it can drain.

Voltage still has to line up, meaning the strip's rated 24V or 12V and the driver's output are the same number, never crossed. Separate runs branch from the driver in parallel rather than one after another, and running them back to a sheltered driver usually beats pushing a driver out into the weather.

What an outdoor LED run failing after rain is really telling you

People buy tape with a rating, install it with indoor clamps and an indoor driver, and consider the job done. The tape is the one part that was never going to fail first.

Here is the habit worth adopting. Before you fix anything down, list every physical opening in the finished run: each cut end, each joint, each penetration, the enclosure lid. Write beside each one how it will be closed and what rating that closure holds. A blank line on that list is where the next storm gets in.

Frequently asked questions

Does an IP67 rating mean the run is waterproof? No. Waterproof is not a rating, it is a word. IP67 states a tested level of dust and temporary immersion protection for that component only, and says nothing about the joints, the ends or the driver you paired it with.

Can I dry the strip out and reuse it? Sometimes, if it was bridging rather than corroded. Disconnect, dry it fully, inspect the copper for green or white deposits, and treat any deposit as the end of that section.

Is silicone sealant on a cut end enough? Only where the manufacturer publishes that as an approved method for that product. End sealing kits and procedures vary by strip, and the wrong compound can attack the coating.

Why did it work through two winters and fail this spring? Small openings admit water slowly. Repeated wet and dry cycles push contamination further in each time, so failure often arrives long after the mistake.

Should the driver go outside near the strip or inside? Wherever its published enclosure rating and mounting instructions allow, which for many units means a sheltered or interior position with the low voltage side run out to the tape.
