A smart controller keeps losing its settings because something interrupts it, not because something inside it has broken. Four causes account for nearly every case. Power drops and the unit returns in whatever default state its firmware holds. A remote gets paired or re-paired, and the handset writes its own values over yours. Decide first whether it forgets or never saved

These look identical from the sofa. They are not the same fault.

Set a value that is easy to recognize, well away from full output and from any preset the unit ships with. Leave it alone for ten minutes, then check it. If it survived, the device did save and something later is overwriting it. If it reverted while nobody went near it, the save never completed.

Then set it again and cut power at the outlet for thirty seconds. What comes back tells you whether the unit restores a stored state or a factory one, which eliminates half the list.

The supply keeps dropping. A controller cannot tell a deliberate power cut from a loose terminal, a bad barrel plug or a brief dip on the utility supply. Each event is a reboot, and the state it comes back in is a firmware decision, not yours (verify whether your unit offers a selectable power-on state before you count on one).

A handset is rewriting the scene. Pair a remote and it becomes a second author. A preset key sends its own stored values to the receiver, which does as asked and discards what you had. Re-pairing after a battery change can also reset a zone.

The save never reached the device. App changes travel over the local network. If the connection drops between the tap and the acknowledgement, the app can show the new value while the controller holds the old one, and the next refresh looks like forgetting.

A wall switch sits upstream. Where the controller is fed through a switched outlet or a switch loop, the household treats that switch as the light switch. Every use is a full power cycle, so the run relights in its default state.

A test order that names the culprit

Take the handsets out of the picture first. Remove the batteries or move them to another room, then set a value from the app and leave it overnight. A setting that survives with no remote in range points at the handset.

If it still drifts, watch the app rather than the light. Make a change and wait for the device to confirm it, not for the slider to move. Sliders move on their own optimism.

Last, tape over the wall switch for two days and control everything on the low voltage side. If the problem stops, that was the mechanism.

Making the fixes hold

Where a controller offers last state or off as its power-on behavior, choose it and stop there. Where it does not, take the wall switch out of daily service and leave the controller supplied, switching through the app or a remote instead.

Handsets need a decision, not a setting. Keep one transmitter per zone, clear the rest at the receiver and label the survivor. Wiring that does not change

Three wiring points hold whatever you found. A smart low voltage controller does not belong downstream of a phase cut wall dimmer unless both sets of documentation allow it, since a chopped feed reaching a device built for a steady one produces behavior no test explains. Match the supply to the tape: 24V strip to a 24V driver, 12V strip to a 12V driver. Several runs on one output branch in parallel, not end to end. Smooth low end dimming depends on a verified chain of strip, driver, controller and protocol.

Why the wall switch gets wired that way

Somebody wires the driver through the room's existing wall switch because it feels tidy and saves teaching a new habit. It also reboots the controller twice a day forever, so every stored scene depends on firmware behavior nobody chose with that duty in mind.

The fix that costs nothing at rough-in: decide early which device is the switch. If the controller is the switch, the driver stays live and the wall plate gets a label asking people to leave it on. Deciding that on paper beats discovering it two years into a run of nightly resets.

Frequently asked questions

Does a factory reset stop the settings disappearing? Only if the cause is a stale pairing or a confused zone map. It does nothing about a wall switch upstream, a loose terminal or a network dropping during saves.

Why does the app show the right value when the lights show something else? The app displays what it sent, not necessarily what arrived. Wait for the device to report back before you treat a change as saved.

Could a neighbor's remote be changing my scenes? It is possible on shared frequency handsets sitting on the same channel or address. Clearing the receiver and re-pairing one transmitter settles it.

Is a controller that forgets after a blackout defective? Not on its own. Coming back in a fixed default is normal for many low voltage controllers. Whether that default can be changed is a per product question.

Do fresh remote batteries change anything? They can. A handset running low may send incomplete commands, and the re-pairing some units need after a battery change is another moment when a zone gets overwritten.
