Phase-Cut LED Dimming Explained for Residential Lighting Projects
Phase-cut dimming is the method most residential wall dimmers use. It reduces brightness by cutting away part of each cycle of the alternating current before it reaches the driver, so less power passes through and the light dims. For LED strip lighting, phase-cut dimming requires a driver built to accept it, paired with a compatible wall dimmer, because a standard non-dimmable driver cannot respond to a cut waveform. It is common in homes because it uses a familiar wall dimmer, but the driver and dimmer still have to be matched for it to work smoothly.
Here is how phase-cut dimming works and what it needs to run well.
How phase-cut dimming works
Household electricity is alternating current, rising and falling many times a second. A phase-cut dimmer works by switching off part of each cycle, or "cutting the phase," so only a portion of each wave reaches the load. Less energy gets through, and the light dims. This is the same principle used to dim many traditional bulbs, which is why phase-cut wall dimmers are so common in homes.
For an LED strip, that cut waveform reaches the driver, not the strip directly. So the driver has to be a phase-cut dimmable type that can interpret the reduced input and lower its low-voltage DC output to the strip in response. Without a driver built for it, phase-cut dimming will not work correctly.
