Household electricity is alternating current, rising and falling many times a second. A phase-cut dimmer works by switching off part of each cycle, or "cutting the phase," so only a portion of each wave reaches the load. Less energy gets through, and the light dims. For an LED strip, that cut waveform reaches the driver, not the strip directly. So the driver has to be a phase-cut dimmable type that can interpret the reduced input and lower its low-voltage DC output to the strip in response. Three parts have to line up. The strip has to be dimmable in this setup, the driver has to be a phase-cut dimmable model, and the wall dimmer has to be compatible with that driver. Phase-cut dimming suits residential projects that want to use a standard wall dimmer, and it keeps the control familiar and on the wall. It is a line-voltage method, so it is separate from low-voltage control approaches. Do not combine a phase-cut wall dimmer with a smart low-voltage controller on the same circuit unless the system documentation specifically allows it, because these are different control methods and mixing them can cause problems.
