Isolate the dead length and mark it
With the run lit, mark the last working emitter before the fault and the first one after it, using low-tack tape rather than a pen on the lens. Extend outward to the nearest printed cut mark beyond each point. That is the piece coming out, slightly longer than the dark stretch itself. Measure it before it goes anywhere: a replacement one cut interval short leaves a gap you cannot close without redoing both joints.
Take the power off, then cut
Unplug or switch off the supply and confirm the run is dead before the blade comes out, since cutting live tape can short the conductors across the blade and a low-voltage circuit is still capable of damaging a driver. If the supply is hardwired, terminated in a junction box, or switched through a wall dimmer, that side of the work goes to a licensed electrician who follows local code, the NEC where applicable, and the driver manufacturer's own instructions.
Cut squarely across the middle of the printed mark with sharp scissors, keeping the blade perpendicular so both pads survive full width. An angled cut leaves a pad and a half at one end, which no connector grips evenly.
Never assume where a strip can be divided. Cut intervals differ by product, by voltage, and by tape format, so read the marking and the specification for the exact item in front of you (verify the interval on the product page before you cut). Some products are built for finer division: the EnoLED MaxCut cut-anywhere COB strip follows its own published cut behavior rather than a general rule about COB tape.
Matching the replacement piece
Five things have to line up. Voltage first: a 24V strip runs from a 24V supply and a 12V strip from a 12V one, and the replacement sits on the same voltage as the run it joins. Then tape width, so the piece fits the same channel and connector body. Then pad layout, since conductor count and spacing decide whether a connector lands on them. Then color temperature and CRI, identical on paper.
Fifth, and the one people skip, is production batch. Two reels of the same product bought a year apart can sit in different color bins, and that shift shows badly when the new piece lands between two lengths of the old. Where the original is gone, match the specification from the LED strip light collection, and consider replacing a longer visible section rather than splicing in a near match.
Making the two joins
Each end of the new piece needs a connection to the old run. Soldering gives the lowest profile joint, and on some narrow or dense products it is the method the manufacturer expects (verify what the product supports before you choose). Whichever you use, get the polarity right, keep the pads free of adhesive residue, and test the repair before pressing the piece into the channel.
