Cut-anywhere earns its place when the work is made of short fixed lengths that stop at an edge somebody looks at: shelves, niches, display cases, treads, a cabinet run ending in open air. A standard interval is fine when the runs are long and the shortfall disappears into a corner or a shadow line. Settle a standard cut interval or cut-anywhere COB by writing down every finished segment length first, then checking where the leftover would land on each one.

Neither strip is better. They solve different geometry problems, and the geometry is on your drawing rather than the product page.

Write out the segments before you shortlist a product

This is the step that gets skipped, and it decides everything else. List each separate length the job needs, in inches, as finished dimensions.

Then take a candidate product and read what it publishes for its cut interval, since that figure belongs to the item and varies between series. Round each segment down to the nearest whole interval and note the leftover. On one 22 foot cove, a small leftover at one end is nothing. On nine shelves, that leftover repeats nine times and shows in every bay.

Three questions, in order.

How many segments does the job contain, and how short are they? Short segments repeat the shortfall and have less length to absorb it.

Where do they end? Visible terminations argue for cut-anywhere; concealed ones do not care.

Can the design absorb the difference another way? Moving a channel a half inch, extending a return, or letting the light stop deliberately short of an edge all solve the same problem without changing product.

Where the shortfall lands decides whether it matters

A gap at the end of a segment is only a defect if the eye goes there.

Light stopping an inch short at an inside corner is invisible: the corner already carries a shadow and nobody has a reference for where it should have stopped. The same inch at the open end of a floating shelf is obvious from across the room, because the shelf edge gives the eye a hard line to compare against.

So mark up your list: which segment ends terminate at a visible edge, and which run into a corner, a return or a stile. If most terminate visibly, that is the case for cut-anywhere. If most die into architecture, the interval is not your problem and you should be choosing on output and format instead.

Cut-anywhere solves length, not format

Worth saying plainly, because it gets muddled: cut-anywhere is a feature of particular products, not a property of COB strip in general. Plenty of COB is built to a standard interval, and the interval for any strip is whatever that item publishes.

Every cut still needs a termination that fits

Cutting is only half of it. Many LED strips can be cut at designated points and reconnected with compatible connectors or soldering, depending on the product. A cut-anywhere strip is no exception, because each cut creates a fresh pair of pads to terminate.

That is where compatibility bites. Pad layout, tape width and whether a given connector suits the product are all per product, so check the connector's listed widths against the strip. Connectors compared with soldering sets out when each method suits. Voltage runs through unchanged: a 24V strip stays on a 24V driver and controller, and 12V stays with 12V.

Cut last, not first

Measure after the millwork is in, not off the drawing. Cabinets shift during install, shelves come in a fraction under, and a segment list built from a plan is a list of hopeful numbers.
