COB LED strip lights use thousands of tiny diodes packed under one continuous phosphor coating, so they cast a smooth line of light with no visible dots. SMD strips place individual LED chips at spaced intervals, which gives strong peak brightness but can show hotspots if the strip sits in the open. What COB LED strips actually are
COB stands for chip-on-board. Instead of mounting separate LED chips along the strip, hundreds of micro diodes are bonded directly to the board and covered by a shared phosphor layer. The result is a single, even ribbon of light.
Because the diodes sit so close together, COB removes the dotted look you get from older strips. It also spreads heat across a wider area, which helps the strip hold its color and brightness over time.
