Strip-to-strip vs strip-to-wire connectors: when to use each
Here is the decision in plain terms. Use a strip-to-strip connector when the two pieces are adjacent and you only need to close a small, fixed distance or a corner. Use a strip-to-wire connector when you need to carry power across a gap, around a door frame, up from a baseboard, or back to a driver mounted some distance away.
Strip-to-wire is also the answer at the start of a run. The first section of strip usually sits away from the driver, so a lead has to carry power to it. An installer habit worth borrowing: sketch the run first and mark every gap and corner. Each spot that two pieces sit apart is a strip-to-wire point; each spot they touch is a strip-to-strip point. Counting them before you shop saves a second order.
Matching the connector to the strip
Whichever style you choose, the connector has to suit the strip, not just the job. Solderless connectors are sized for a given width and pad spacing, in versions for different conductor counts depending on whether the strip is single color or multi channel. One built for another width or pad layout will not seat reliably. Not every strip is joined the same way. Wiring, polarity, and power
Both connector types depend on correct polarity. Line up the positive and negative marks end to end so the whole run reads the same way. A reversed lead shows up as a dead section or, on a multi-channel strip, a color that will not match.
When you branch a layout, wire constant-voltage strips in parallel back to the driver rather than in series, and keep the total load within the driver's rated capacity. Series wiring drops voltage down the chain and dims the far end. Match the supply voltage too: a 24V strip needs a 24V supply, a 12V strip needs a 12V supply, and never cross them.
Electrical safety
The connectors themselves are low-voltage work at the strip. The supply side is not. Follow the strip and driver instructions, and leave hardwired driver connections, junction boxes, wall dimmers, and any line-voltage work to a qualified electrician where local code requires it. Low-voltage guidance at the strip is never permission to do unqualified work at the wall.
