When to use a surface-mount LED channel
Choose a surface-mount channel when the surface is already built and you do not want to cut into it. Under a kitchen cabinet, along a bookshelf, up a stair stringer, behind a desk, or around a mirror frame, you can fasten a channel directly and be done. It is also the right pick when the run is within reach or view, because the cover keeps dust and fingers off the LEDs and blends the diodes into a smoother line.

When another channel type fits better
A surface-mount channel is not always the answer. If a raised track would look bulky on a fine piece of furniture or a finished ceiling, a recessed channel set into a groove gives a flush line instead. If you are lighting from an inside corner toward a countertop, a corner channel aims the beam better than a flat run. A diffusing cover reduces the appearance of dots but does not guarantee they disappear, because LED density and how deep the strip sits below the cover also matter, so a denser strip under a frosted cover gives the smoothest line. A surface-mount channel is a mechanical, low-voltage part, so mounting it involves no line-voltage work.
