How a channel helps dissipate heat
LED strips are efficient, but they are not cool. The diodes and the copper in the tape generate heat while they run, and left on a thin or trapped surface that warmth can build up under the strip. Sustained heat is hard on any electronics over time.
Aluminum conducts heat well, so mounting a strip inside a channel gives that warmth a larger metal path to move into and release. A channel helps dissipate heat rather than letting it sit against the tape. This matters most for brighter, higher-output strips and for long continuous runs, and less for a short, low-output accent. To get the benefit, the strip has to sit flat against the base with full contact, since an air gap slows the transfer, and you should still respect the maximum run length on the strip's product page.
Protection for the strip and its adhesive
A strip stuck to open drywall, wood, or metal is only as secure as its double-sided tape, and warm surfaces, humidity, and the occasional bump all work against that bond. Once a corner peels, the rest tends to follow.
Set inside a channel, the strip is captured by the walls of the track and shielded by the cover. The channel screws or clips to the surface, so the mounting job no longer rests entirely on the adhesive. The cover also keeps dust off the LEDs anywhere the run is within reach, such as under a cabinet, along a stair, or on a shelf edge. The channel takes the mechanical abuse so the delicate part does not.
Diffusion for a cleaner line of light
The most visible reason people add a channel is the cover. A clear cover mainly protects, while a frosted or opal cover scatters the light and blends the individual diodes. On a strip with widely spaced points, a diffusing cover reduces the appearance of dots and gives a more continuous glow.
It is worth being precise here. A diffuser reduces the look of dots, but it does not guarantee they vanish. How well they disappear also depends on the LED density of the strip, how deep the channel sits the strip below the cover, and the diffuser material. A denser strip in a deeper channel with an opal cover gives the smoothest result, while a widely spaced strip under a shallow clear cover will still show structure. If an unbroken line is the goal, pair a diffusing cover with a higher-density strip rather than expecting the cover to do all the work.
