TRIAC, ELV and MLV Dimming: Understanding Common Dimming Terms
TRIAC, ELV, and MLV are labels for types of phase-cut dimming, and they describe how a dimmer cuts the alternating-current waveform and what kind of load it is designed for. TRIAC and MLV are leading-edge methods, which cut the front of each cycle, while ELV is a trailing-edge method, which cuts the back. The reason these terms matter for LED strip lighting is compatibility: the dimmer type, the driver, and the load all have to match, so knowing which term applies to your driver tells you which dimmer to use.

The idea behind the terms
All three terms sit under phase-cut dimming, the method that dims by removing part of each AC cycle, which our phase-cut dimming guide explains in full. The difference between them is which part of the cycle is cut and what kind of load the dimmer was built for. That distinction is why a dimmer labeled one way may not suit a driver expecting another. Think of TRIAC, ELV, and MLV as a shorthand for "how this dimmer cuts the wave and what it was designed to control."
