Voltage matching comes first: 24V strips take a 24V driver, and a 12V supply will not do. Calculate watts per foot times the installed footage for each driver, leaving at least 20 percent current headroom (verify that guidance before you rely on it). Wire runs in parallel from the driver rather than in series so the far corner matches the near one. Strips produce heat in use, so give a driver room to breathe instead of sealing it inside a soffit with no airflow. Because basement work often means a hardwired driver, a junction box, a wall dimmer, or a new circuit, treat that side as line-voltage work and defer to the manufacturer instructions, local code, and the NEC where it applies, with a licensed electrician when required.

Common mistakes in a basement install

The frequent errors here are geometric. Too little clearance above the strip creates a hot band on the ceiling above the cove and darkness beyond. Mounting the strip too far from the wall throws the light out into the room instead of across the ceiling. Mixing two color temperatures around one perimeter shows up instantly on a flat ceiling. And running a single long series chain instead of parallel drops voltage down the line, leaving the last few feet dim. A practical tip: before you build the cove face, hold the powered strip at two or three setbacks and look at the ceiling from across the room.
