A Complete Cove Lighting Build for One Room

A cove lighting build hides a strip inside a ledge or trough so the ceiling becomes the light source and no fixture is visible. Two decisions settle the result before a part is ordered: where the strip sits in section, and how the run will be dimmed.

Almost every disappointing cove was built in the wrong order. The trough went up first, and only afterward did anyone work out where the strip should sit inside it, by which point the lip is the wrong height and nothing about that is cheap to change.

Settle the section before a single stud is cut

Draw a section through the cove before anything is framed. Setback is how far the strip sits from the face it lights, lip height is how tall the front edge stands, and trough depth is the distance from strip to ceiling.

The lip has to hide the strip from every standing sightline, and the worst case is rarely where people expect. Check the doorway, the far corner and the seating position with a card held at the proposed height. If the diode line shows, raise the lip rather than pushing the strip back, since more setback drags the bright band off the wall.

Settle output, color and dimming before you buy the driver

Output is judged against the ceiling, not a number on a box. A white ceiling eight inches above the strip needs far less per foot than a dark one three feet away.

Dimming decides the driver, which is why it cannot wait. A dimmable driver with a wall dimmer is a different chain from a low-voltage controller, and the two methods stay separate unless the documentation permits otherwise. Compatibility is read off what the makers publish for the exact strip, driver and control device in front of you, never inferred from all three carrying the word dimmable.

Order the parts and lay the cove lighting build out on the floor

Measure the perimeter along the inside face of the trough and add the corner returns, where footage quietly disappears. Decide where the driver sits, then plan each segment as its own pair of conductors back to it.

Size the driver from that footage. Multiply watts per foot by the installed length and add headroom for current draw. LED Club currently advises 20 percent as a minimum, so confirm the present figure before specifying a unit. Mount the channel and set the strip in the trough

Clean and dry the trough following the mounting instructions for your strip and channel, since each product differs. Fix the channel from one corner, so cumulative error lands in one place. Pick from the aluminum channel options.

Do not bend a strip around an inside corner. Stop the run and join the next leg with a corner connector or a wire jumper. Many strips can be cut at their designated points and rejoined with a compatible connector or by soldering, depending on the product; check yours first.

Aim the strip at the ceiling, not out at the room. A channel helps dissipate heat and holds a long run straight. Nothing makes it mandatory, and it reduces but does not guarantee visible dotting, an outcome that follows just as much from LED density, channel depth and diffuser choice.

Wire in parallel, then stop where the line voltage starts

Every segment runs its own pair of conductors back to the driver, in parallel. Never chain one off the end of the last in series, and never let total load exceed the driver's rated capacity. Voltage stays constant, so a 24V strip needs a 24V driver and 24V controller. Parallel and series LED strip wiring explains why.

Your work stops at the driver's input terminals. From there back to the panel the job belongs to a licensed electrician working under local electrical code, the NEC where applicable, and the manufacturer instructions issued with the equipment: a hardwired driver, a junction box, cable inside a wall, and any switch or dimmer box. Nothing is opened until the breaker is off. A live line-voltage connection is never probed or tested, and confidence with 24V cable grants no permission on the 120V side.

Commission at the lowest setting. Walk the room, check each corner for a dark gap or a bright overlap, then look at the lip from the doorway. Give the driver the clearance its instructions specify, since LEDs and drivers generate heat in normal use.
