Two questions come before product choice. Can you reach the strip again once the scaffolding is gone, and does the run look deliberate from every floor it can be seen from?

A double-height space is seen from more angles than any other part of a house. Someone in the doorway looks up at it, someone on the landing looks across, and someone on the stairs sees it edge on. A run that hides neatly from one viewpoint often sits fully exposed from another, so trace every sightline on the drawings before you fix the detail. The usual answer is a deep reveal or a channel with a diffuser, set so the aperture points away from the most common line of sight.

Output has to rise with the ceiling. Light thrown at a ceiling twenty feet up arrives weaker than at one eight feet up, so a strip that looks generous in a hallway can disappear in an entry. Grazing a feature wall

Grazing means putting the strip close to a wall surface and aiming along it, so every ridge in stone, plaster, or slatted timber casts its own small shadow. It is unforgiving of a flat wall, since grazing only rewards texture. Distance from the surface is the control you have: closer exaggerates texture, further out flattens it into a wash. Mock it up on the real material if you can, since the same strip behaves differently on split face stone than on smooth plaster. Access for maintenance, decided before installation

This is what separates a foyer job from a living room job. If a strip sits thirty feet up in a coffer, plan how it will be reached in five years. That usually means one of three things: a channel with a removable diffuser and slack in the feed wire, a driver mounted somewhere reachable rather than buried in the same cavity, or a design that keeps the run within ladder height. Putting the driver at floor level, with only the low-voltage feed going up, is the single most useful decision available.

Stairwell runs in a foyer

Along a stairwell, strips are typically set under a handrail, in a recessed wall channel following the stair pitch, or under each tread nosing. These runs make the treads and the walking surface easier to see in low light, which is a matter of visibility and appearance. To make that light genuinely useful, aim it down at the treads rather than into the eye of anyone climbing, keep the level modest at night, and keep the line parallel to the stringer. Power, heat, and the electrical side

Every constant-voltage section runs in parallel from the driver, never in series, and the driver voltage matches the strip exactly, 24V to 24V or 12V to 12V with no crossing. Add up watts per foot times the installed length of all the feature runs, then allow at least 20 percent current headroom (verify the current guidance before ordering). Tall spaces mean long feed wires, so check wire gauge for the distance as well as driver capacity.

LED strips produce heat, and in a sealed coffer there is less air to carry it away. An aluminum channel from the LED channels and profiles collection helps dissipate that heat and protects the tape; it is not mandatory, and it reduces but does not guarantee removal of visible dots, which also depends on LED density, channel depth, and diffuser. Anything involving a hardwired driver, a junction box in the ceiling, or a wall dimmer is line-voltage work, so follow the manufacturer instructions, your local code, and the NEC where it applies, and bring in a licensed electrician where the work requires one.

Common mistakes in tall entries

Underestimating output is the classic one: a feature run that reads as a faint smudge from the ground floor. Second is a joint placed where the eye lands, since a splice in the middle of an otherwise perfect reveal is the only thing anyone will look at. Third, and most expensive, is sealing a strip into a detail with no access and no spare wire. An installer habit worth copying: before the plasterers close the reveal, power the run and photograph it from the front door, the landing, and the top of the stairs. Fixing an angle then costs an hour; fixing it later costs scaffolding.
