Getting the cove or perimeter run right
A cove wants a continuous line rather than a dotted one, because the ceiling above magnifies every gap. Set the strip back from the front lip so the source stays hidden, and leave room between it and the ceiling for the light to open up. A COB strip produces that smooth band, although whether COB or another format suits a cove depends on output, viewing distance, channel depth, diffuser, LED density, and control method, so judge it product by product. China cabinet and display lighting
Inside a cabinet, the light has to come from somewhere the eye does not land. Vertical runs in the rear corners wash the back panel and skim across shelves without glaring through the glass. Glass shelves let one high run carry down through several levels, so start with less output than you think you need. Low brightness tape is normally plenty at this distance. High CRI so finishes and food look right
Color rendering matters more here than in most spaces, because a walnut sideboard, a set of plates, and a roast on a platter all live or die on color. A high CRI strip renders them closer to their true appearance, which is a visual result and nothing more. Check the published CRI figure on the product page (verify it before you rely on it), and keep the color temperature consistent between cove and cabinet, since two slightly different whites in one sightline read as a mistake.
Dimming and power without surprises
Evening dining wants low output, so dimming is not optional here. Smooth, flicker-free dimming depends on the whole chain agreeing: strip, driver, any wall dimmer, and any low-voltage controller, including protocol and minimum load. Verify that combination first, and do not put a smart low-voltage controller and a phase-cut wall dimmer on one circuit unless the system documentation explicitly allows it. For power, match voltage exactly, so a 24V strip runs from a 24V driver and never a 12V supply. Size the driver from watts per foot times the combined installed length of cove and cabinet, then add at least 20 percent current headroom (verify the current LED Club guidance). Wire the runs in parallel from the driver rather than in series, so the cabinet does not sag while the cove stays bright. Strips do produce heat, and an aluminum channel from the LED channels and profiles collection helps dissipate it while keeping a cove run straight; a channel is never mandatory, and it reduces but does not guarantee removal of visible dots. Any hardwired driver, junction box, or wall dimmer is line-voltage work, so follow the manufacturer instructions, your local code, and the NEC where it applies, and bring in a licensed electrician when the job calls for one.
