What the number is scoring

CRI is an average of how faithfully a source renders a set of reference color samples, on a scale where 100 is the reference itself. The general index most products publish is built from the first eight samples, all of them fairly muted pastels, which is why a product can post a strong general figure and still handle saturated reds poorly.

Side by side, the differences read as appearance rather than as brightness. Wood grain gains depth instead of flattening toward a gray brown. Fabric holds the color it had in the showroom rather than drifting a shade off. Food on a counter looks like the food and not a duller print of it. Skin looks closer to the way it looks in daylight, rather than picking up a washed or sallow cast, and that matters for the simple reason that people notice it in mirrors and in photographs.

On its own in a room, with nothing to compare against, a lower rendering source is easy enough to live with. The moment two sources sit in the same field of view, the eye finds the difference in a second. That is why mixing rendering levels inside one sightline generates more complaints than using a lower level consistently throughout.

Where the higher figure is worth specifying

Some positions justify it without an argument. Bathroom and dressing mirrors, wardrobe interiors, and fitting rooms are places where somebody judges color and then walks out of the building with the result. Kitchens follow the same logic, particularly over a prep surface or anywhere food is presented. Retail display, art walls, and joinery where the finish is itself the product all lean on rendering to sell the surface.

Then there are the positions where it changes little. A cove uplighting a plain white ceiling, a strip under a stair nosing, a garage or utility line whose whole job is making the floor visible: those are about level and uniformity, and rendering rarely decides them.

There is a trade sitting behind the choice. Pushing a source toward better rendering generally gives up some efficacy, so two products drawing the same watts per foot may not deliver the same lumens per foot. Compare the published figures for both rather than assuming a fixed penalty (verify those numbers on the product pages before you rely on them).

Rendering is a per product figure, never a category one

This is the point that gets lost most often. No rendering level belongs to a technology, a construction format, or a brand. COB and SMD products both appear across the range, and a single strip family can offer different rendering options at different color temperatures within the same series.

So do not assume, and do not take a number from a category page as though it applied to everything listed beneath it. Read the CRI stated for the exact product, at the exact color temperature you plan to order, and check whether a separate deep red value is published alongside it. Common mistakes

The first is treating rendering as a brightness upgrade. It is not one. A high rendering strip at low output is still a low output strip, and the two specifications have to be chosen separately, from two different lines on the same page.

The second is mixing levels within one sightline. Under cabinet tape at one rendering level next to open shelf tape at another will look wrong even though each is acceptable alone, and the client almost always blames whichever went in second.

The third is buying on a headline figure without checking which color temperature it was measured at, because a family can publish different values at 2700K and at 5000K. Confirm the number against the exact variant on the order.

The habit that settles all of it: order a short sample length, hold it against the actual materials in the actual room, and look at it after dark with the other lights on. Cabinet doors, stone, and fabric swatches under real conditions say more in five minutes than a specification sheet does in an hour.
