Task light on the desk and under shelves
For a desk you work at, you want enough light on the surface to see clearly and the color to look right. Do not mix incompatible control methods, such as a low-voltage controller and a phase-cut wall dimmer on the same circuit, unless the system documentation explicitly permits it.
Channels, heat, and a clean finish
An aluminum channel with a diffuser keeps the tape straight under a shelf, softens a COB run into an even band, and its aluminum helps dissipate the heat the strip produces. LED strips do generate heat in use, so a channel helps manage it while protecting the tape and improving the look. A channel reduces but does not guarantee removal of visible dots, which also depend on LED density, channel depth, and diffuser. On an exposed shelf front a diffused channel looks more finished than bare tape.
Power, voltage, and safety
Match the voltage exactly: a 24V strip needs a 24V driver, never crossed with a 12V supply. Size the driver from the strip's watts per foot times your installed length, add current headroom of at least 20 percent (verify), and pick one with enough capacity. If you run several sections together, wire the constant-voltage runs in parallel, not in series, so one does not dim the next.
Tuck the driver behind the desk or in a nearby cavity, out of sight. Any hardwired driver connection, junction box, or wall dimmer at line voltage is work for a qualified electrician where local code requires it, so follow the product instructions along with your local code and the NEC where it applies.
