Inside vs Outside Corner Turns with LED Strips

Walk a finished cove and the corners give the work away before anything else does. One kind folds the strip into the angle where two surfaces meet; the other carries it around a projecting edge. Inside vs outside corner turns is not a naming quibble: the two differ in the light they throw, in what the tape can physically do, and in how forgiving the join is. An inside corner hides a small gap. An outside corner puts every fraction of it on display.

Which corner is which

An inside corner is concave. The angle opens toward the room, as where two walls meet or at the back of a U shaped cabinet run, and the strip turns back on itself so its legs face each other.

An outside corner is convex. The angle points at you, as on the nose of an island or the edge of a column, and the strip crosses the point so the legs face away.

What the light does at an inside corner

Where two legs throw into the same volume, their output overlaps. The surface inside the angle collects light from both directions, so the corner reads brighter than the straight sections either side of it, noticeably so on a pale finish. In a cove that is usually pleasant; in a shallow cabinet reveal it pulls the eye to the corner rather than the shelf.

The overlap also buys tolerance. Leave an inch of unlit tape at the vertex and the neighboring leg largely fills it, which is why inside corners survive rough measuring.

What the light does at an outside corner

Around a convex edge the legs diverge and nothing covers for anyone. A gap at the point becomes a dark notch on the exact face people look at, usually nearer eye level than an inside corner sits. Grazing angles compound it: the last inch of each leg lights its own surface at a slant, so the finish on the edge can go dim even with the tape brought right up to the point. Either close both legs as tight to the point as the product allows, or make the shadow line deliberate and even so it reads as a design decision.

A strip flexes along its face, the way a tape measure curls, so a corner in that plane is not a bend at all; forcing one creases the copper and stresses the emitters. That leaves three moves: cut and bridge the legs with wire, fold the tape through a diagonal crease where the product explicitly permits it, or bring the corner to hardware built for the job.

Cut and jump does most of the work, on either geometry, at whatever angle the room hands you. When a corner piece earns its place

Inside aluminum profile, the corner becomes a profile problem. Miter the extrusion and carry a cut and jump behind the joint, or fit a purpose made corner piece where the range offers one (check the accessory list for your specific channel first). A mitered inside corner closes tightly and swallows the jumper wire. Outside corners are fussier, since the cover meets at the point too, and a loose miter shows as a bright line. Whichever channel or profile you pick, an aluminum housing also helps dissipate the heat the strip produces, though it is never mandatory.

Where corner turns go wrong

The commonest error is measuring a run as though it pivots on a mathematical point. Each leg loses the distance from its last usable cut point to the corner, which on a long cut interval is several inches per turn. Count them and add that to your order length.

Next is making the joint after the tape is stuck down. Build and test each jumper on the bench, then mount. Third is polarity: a run that dies past the third turn is more often a reversed pair than a failed strip.

Borrow the dry fit from trim carpenters. Hold both legs in place, power them from a bench supply, and look at the real light on the real finish before adhesive touches anything. It settles the gap argument faster than any tape measure.

Frequently asked questions

Is an inside or an outside corner harder to light well? The outside corner. Its legs face away from each other, so nothing fills a gap at the point, and the edge sits where people look. An inside corner overlaps its own output.

Can I fold the strip around a corner instead of cutting it? Only where the product documentation says that fold is supported. A strip bends along its face, not across it, and a diagonal crease loads the copper traces. Otherwise cut and bridge with wire.

Do I need a special corner connector? No. A cut and a two conductor jumper handle both geometries with more freedom over angle. A dedicated corner piece earns its place inside aluminum profile, where it also solves the cover joint.

Why is my inside corner brighter than the rest of the run? Both legs are throwing into the same wedge of surface, so it is normal. If it distracts, pull the tape back an inch from the vertex on one leg, or turn onto a deeper reveal.

How much extra strip should I allow for corners? Allow the offcut made at each turn, which is the distance from the last usable cut point back to the corner, plus jumper wire. Across four or five corners that adds up.
