An aluminum channel as the flat carrier
A profile screwed to the wall is the cleanest answer: the strip lives inside a straight extrusion and never touches the texture. The channel bridges low spots and gives a defined line to sight along. Aluminum also helps dissipate the heat a strip produces, and a diffusing cover reduces the appearance of visible dots without guaranteeing they disappear. A channel is not mandatory, but on texture it does structural work, not just cosmetic.
Fixing centers matter more here than on a flat wall: screws every foot or two stop the extrusion following a bow, and flexible sealant behind a profile on stucco takes up small hollows so the run does not rock. Rails and clips when a rigid profile will not sit
Where the wall waves in and out, clips fastened at intervals hold the strip mechanically and follow a gentler line, leaving the emitters exposed and the light undiffused. The other approach is a batten or flat stock screwed to the wall: fix it to the texture, take up the irregularity with packers behind it, then mount the strip or the channel to the flat face you have created. Plan the fixings and the services before you drill
Switch off the circuit you are working near and know what is behind the wall before a bit goes in, because an anchor into a hidden conductor or pipe is a serious problem. Anything involving line voltage, a hardwired driver, a junction box, or a wall dimmer is work for a licensed electrician, who will apply local code, the NEC where applicable, and the manufacturer documentation.
Different textures take different anchors. Hollow drywall wants an anchor sized to the board, or a screw into a stud; brick and block want a masonry anchor set into solid material rather than the mortar joint; timber takes a screw. Test one in an inconspicuous spot first, because stucco over foam sheathing behaves nothing like stucco over block.
Plan the low-voltage side too: mark where the lead exits, where the driver sits, and where each run returns to it, since constant-voltage strips go back to the supply in parallel rather than daisy-chained in series. Match voltages, 24V strip to 24V supply, and size the driver from watts per foot times installed length plus current headroom, currently at least 20 percent (verify the figure and the driver rating before you specify).
Mounting LED strips on textured surfaces without drilling
Sometimes fixings are not allowed, in a rental or on a finish that cannot be repaired. Make a flat surface rather than improve the texture: a painted board, a picture rail, or a slim panel hung with a removable system gives the tape the smooth face it needs. Filling, priming, and taping to a narrow sanded band also works on drywall, at the cost of a patch to make good later. More tape or harder pressing does not.
