My LED Driver Got Hot and Shut Down: What Caused It

If an LED driver got hot and shut down, the shutdown itself is usually the healthy part of the story. Many supplies include thermal protection that cuts output at a set internal temperature, so the unit stopping is a response rather than a failure. What matters is why the temperature climbed, and five answers cover most of it: a supply sized under the load it feeds, a supply sized with no margin above it, a sealed or unventilated location, a hot space around it, and protection stepping in as designed.

Read the timing, because the timing names the cause

Write down the pattern before you order anything: how long it runs before dropping out, whether it returns on its own, and whether the interval repeats from a cold start.

A run that lasts an hour on a cool morning and twenty minutes on a hot afternoon says the room is part of the problem. One that drops out at the same point whatever the weather points at load or at the enclosure. A supply that never restarts until you cycle the power behaves differently from one that recovers by itself (verify whether your supply has thermal protection at all and how it is documented to recover).

Cut the power and let the unit cool before you handle it or open its cover. Hardwired supplies, junction boxes and any permanent connection are for a licensed electrician, done to the manufacturer's instructions, local code and the NEC where it governs.

Five reasons an LED driver got hot and shut down

It is under-sized for the run. The most common cause and the easiest to prove. Somebody measured after the tape went up, or a second run was added later, and the total moved past what the unit is rated to deliver.

It was sized with nothing to spare. A supply chosen to match the load exactly runs at full output continuously. Rated capacity is what a unit can deliver, not where it is comfortable all evening.

It is sealed in. Cabinets with no vent, closed coves, insulated ceiling voids and shallow boxes all hold warm air against the case, and still air carries very little away.

The space around it is already hot. An attic in August, a spot above a heat outlet, or a cavity shared with the tape all raise the starting temperature before the unit does any work of its own.

Protection did its job. Where the other four are ruled out and the unit recovers cleanly each time, you may be watching a designed response rather than a defect. The conditions still need fixing.

Do the arithmetic before you order a replacement

Five minutes here settles the first two causes outright.

Take the watts per foot published for your tape, multiply it by the number of feet actually installed, and add at least 20 percent on top before you compare the total with any supply's rating (verify both the watts per foot figure and the headroom guidance currently in force, since neither is a constant across products). Count every run the unit feeds, including anything added since the original install.

Choosing the replacement once the numbers are in

The LED power supplies collection lists capacity, form factor and mounting type item by item. Give the supply somewhere to put its heat

Strips and supplies both generate heat in normal use, and a supply working in still air has nowhere to send it.

Site the unit where air can move around the case and keep whatever clearance the manufacturer states (verify the clearances and the operating temperature range published for that model). Mount it to a solid surface rather than onto soft insulation, keep it out of the same sealed cavity as the tape where the design allows, and leave it reachable. Where the only spot is a cabinet, a vent at the top and a gap at the bottom lets warm air leave.

Why the driver ends up in the worst spot in the room

Driver location gets settled last, in a hurry, after the tape is stuck down and the trim is on. Whatever void is left over becomes the driver cupboard, and that void is usually small, closed and warm.

Reverse the order. Choose where the supply lives at the same moment you choose where the tape goes, and give it a ventilated space with access. One habit worth borrowing: write the total connected wattage and the install date on a label stuck to the case. Two years from now, that label is the only record of how much margin was left.

Frequently asked questions

It comes back by itself after a while. Is it faulty? Not necessarily. A unit with thermal protection may recover once it cools. Repeated cycling still means the load or the conditions need attention, so treat the recovery as information rather than a resolution.

How much spare capacity should I leave? Add at least 20 percent above the connected load as current LED Club guidance, and check that figure and the supply's published rating before you commit to a model.

Can the driver share the cavity with the strip? Where possible, keep them apart. Both produce heat, and putting them in one sealed space means each is warming the other.

Would a physically larger unit run cooler? A unit with more capacity for the same load generally works less hard. Ventilation and ambient temperature still apply, so capacity alone does not settle it.

Is it safe to keep using a supply that has tripped? Follow what the manufacturer publishes for that model, and have anything hardwired inspected by a licensed electrician. Until the cause is found, expect the trip to repeat.
