Two things in a cooler work against a light source: the temperature and the water. What refrigerated case LED strip lighting has to survive

A merchandiser is a small, cold, wet box with glass in front. Cold air is not the enemy on its own; LEDs generally cope with low ambient temperatures better than with heat. The difficulty is the cycle: door opens, warm room air enters, moisture condenses on the coldest surfaces, and defrost adds another round of wetting.

So water reaches the tape, joints, and wire entries daily, not occasionally. Anything treated as an indoor dry location component ends up sitting in liquid water.

Drivers usually live outside the cold zone, in the canopy or machine compartment. Run the low voltage feed through a gland or sealed entry rather than an open hole, because the hole is where water follows the wire.

Reading the two numbers that matter

Neither the operating temperature range nor the IP rating is a class wide property. Two products in one series can differ, so check the listing for the exact item.

On moisture, work from the exact figure, not from the word waterproof. IP20 covers dry interiors and nothing else. IP65 means the product resists jets of water from any direction. IP67 means it withstands temporary immersion. Packaging, produce, and printed labels all shift under a low rendering source. A high CRI product keeps those appearances closer to daylight, which is why CRI is worth reading off the page rather than inferring from a series name.

Color temperature follows the merchandise and the rest of the store. Cooler settings suit chilled and frozen sections in many layouts, warmer settings suit deli and bakery counters, and a mismatch between the case and the aisle above it shows from a few feet away. Power, wiring, and getting the case serviced

Work the load out case by case: installed feet times the published watts per foot, then pick a driver holding at least 20 percent current headroom above that number (verify the current guidance). Match voltage exactly: 24V tape on a 24V driver, never crossed. Shelf runs and mullions return in parallel rather than chained in series, so the far door does not sit dimmer than the first.

Strips still generate heat while running, even in a cold cabinet, and an aluminum profile inside a shelf rail helps dissipate it while protecting the tape from carts and restocking. No cabinet requires one. A profile reduces visible dotting without guaranteeing it disappears, since dot appearance tracks LED density, profile depth, and diffuser too.

Leave the mains supply, hardwired drivers, junction boxes, and fixed switching to a licensed electrician, who follows the manufacturer instructions, local code, and the NEC. Case manufacturers publish their own service instructions, which govern anything inside their cabinet.

What goes wrong in cold cases

The merchandiser's check worth copying: load the case, close it, run a full defrost cycle, then look at the bottom shelf from a shopper's standing position. An empty cabinet on a bench tells you almost nothing.
