LED Strip Lighting FAQ

1. How do I install LED strip lights?

Before starting your LED strip light installation, make sure you have all required components:

  • LED strip lights
  • LED driver (power supply)
  • Controller or dimmer (if applicable)
  • Connectors or soldering tools
  • Extension wire
  • Mounting surface or aluminum channel

Many LED strip light kits include the required components for standard installations.

Step 1: Test before installation
Plug the LED strip into the driver and power source to confirm it turns on and functions properly. Disconnect power before proceeding.

Step 2: Measure the installation area
Measure the exact location where the strip will be installed to determine required length.

Step 3: Prepare the surface
Clean the mounting surface thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. Dust or grease will reduce adhesive performance.

Step 4: Cut the strip if needed
Cut only at the designated cut marks printed on the strip. Cutting elsewhere will damage the circuit. Reconnect temporarily to test again before final mounting.

Step 5: Mount the strip
Remove the adhesive backing, align carefully, and press firmly into place. For professional installations, aluminum LED channels are strongly recommended for improved heat dissipation and longevity.

Step 6: Final connection
Connect the strip to the LED driver and controller if used, then connect the driver to the power source.

2. Which accessories do I need for LED strip lights?

LED strip lighting is a complete system. In addition to the strip itself, most installations require:

LED Driver (Power Supply)
Converts AC line voltage to low-voltage DC required by the LED strip. The driver must match the strip voltage and be properly sized based on total wattage.

Connectors or Soldering Materials
Used to join strip sections, extend runs, or connect to wiring.

LED Aluminum Channel
Provides heat dissipation, protects the strip, and improves light diffusion. Strongly recommended for visible or high-output installations.

Controller or Dimmer
Required for brightness control, tunable white adjustment, RGB control, or smart integration.

Optional accessories may include extension wire, power injection cables, mounting clips, and diffusers.

3. How do I choose the right LED strip for my project?

Choosing the right LED strip lighting starts with three decisions:

  1. Installation location
  2. Lighting purpose
  3. Required brightness level

Accent lighting requires less brightness than task lighting. For most residential and architectural applications, high-CRI LED strip lights deliver the best visual quality.

4. What CRI should I choose and why does it matter?

CRI measures how accurately colors appear under a light source.

  • CRI 90+ is recommended for kitchens, living spaces, retail, and architectural lighting
  • High CRI lighting improves the appearance of wood, stone, food, artwork, and finishes
5. How bright should my LED strip lights be?

Brightness is measured in lumens per foot.

  • Accent lighting: lower lumen output
  • Ambient lighting: medium lumen output
  • Task lighting: higher lumen output

If dimming is planned, choosing a slightly brighter strip provides better flexibility.

6. What is the difference between COB and SMD LED strip lights?

COB LED strips use densely packed micro LEDs covered by a phosphor layer, creating a smooth, dot-free line of light.

SMD LED strips use individual LED chips spaced along the strip. They typically provide higher peak brightness but may show visible dots if not installed in deeper channels.

Choose COB for visible installations. Choose SMD for hidden, high-output applications.

7. What color temperature should I choose?

Color temperature is measured in Kelvin and defines how warm or cool the light appears.

  • Warmer tones create a softer atmosphere
  • Neutral tones provide balance
  • Cooler tones increase brightness perception

Tunable white options allow flexibility after installation.

8. Should I choose 12V or 24V LED strip lights?

24V LED strips allow longer runs with reduced voltage drop and are preferred for most architectural applications.

12V LED strips are suitable for shorter runs and compact layouts.

9. How do I choose the correct LED driver?

To size a driver:

  1. Confirm strip voltage
  2. Multiply watts per foot by total length
  3. Add at least 20 percent safety margin

Example:
4W per foot × 20 feet = 80W
Choose a 100W driver.

10. Can LED strip lights be dimmed?

Yes. LED strip lights can be dimmed when paired with compatible drivers and control systems.

Dimming options include wall dimmers, low-voltage controls, and smart systems.

11. How long can LED strip lights run before voltage drop occurs?

Voltage drop causes uneven brightness over long runs.

To prevent voltage drop:

  • Limit run length
  • Use parallel wiring
  • Add power injection
  • Choose higher voltage strips
12. Can LED strip lights be cut to length?

Yes. Cut only at designated cut marks.

After cutting, reconnect using compatible connectors or soldered wiring.

13. How should LED strip lights be mounted?

Adhesive backing allows quick installation, but aluminum channels are recommended for:

  • Better heat dissipation
  • Improved light diffusion
  • Extended lifespan
14. What IP rating do I need for my LED strip lighting application?

IP (Ingress Protection) ratings indicate how well an LED strip is protected against dust and moisture. The rating has two digits:

  • The first digit indicates protection against solid particles (dust)
  • The second digit indicates protection against liquids (water)

Use the following guidelines:

IP20 – Dry Indoor Locations
Suitable for living rooms, bedrooms, shelves, and dry architectural applications. Not suitable for moisture exposure.

IP65 – Splash or Humidity Areas
Suitable for kitchens near sinks, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and covered patios where splashing or humidity may occur.

IP67 – Outdoor and Wet Locations
Suitable for exterior installations and areas exposed to rain or temporary water contact.

Important:
The LED driver must also be rated for the installation environment.

15. What certifications should I look for?

LED strip lights and drivers should be UL or ETL Listed to ensure safety and compliance in North America.
