Backlit Logo LED Strip Lighting and Reception Soffits

A logo wall fails in one of two ways: a blotchy face with bright patches behind each emitter, or a halo strong at the top and thin at the bottom. Backlit logo LED strip lighting is a geometry problem. Setback between the strip and the surface it lights, cavity reflectance, and where the run sits relative to the letterform edge decide almost everything, and they are settled on a mock-up, not a drawing.

How backlit logo LED strip lighting avoids hot spots

Every source throws a cone of light, and a cone needs distance to spread. Too close behind a panel and you print the run onto the face as a bright band. Enough setback and adjacent cones merge before they land.

There is no universal number for that setback: it moves with panel diffusion, cavity reflectance, and emitter pitch. More diffusion allows less depth; a clear or lightly frosted face demands more. Painting the cavity flat white lifts the whole field and softens the step between the lit band and the corners, the cheapest improvement on a logo box.

For halo lit letters standing off a wall, the run goes on the back face, inset from the edge, so the wall catches an even glow, not a hard outline. Inset too far and the letter reads thin; not far enough and the tape outline shows through the gap.

Setback depth and how to prove it

Build a sample. An offcut of tape, the real panel material, and a slidable piece of timber settles in ten minutes what a spec argues over for a week.

Power the offcut, hold it at three or four setbacks, and photograph each straight on with the room lights off. The camera exaggerates banding, which helps. Repeat with the cavity painted and unpainted; the difference surprises people.

A dot free COB line reduces the problem at source, the emitters being already continuous. The soffit cove above the reception counter

A soffit above a desk does a different job: a band of light on the ceiling or back wall, so the counter reads as a lit object without a downlight glaring at whoever works there.

Three details decide whether it looks resolved. The run sits on the horizontal leg, back from the front edge, so nobody at the counter sees it. The return leg is deep enough to hide the tape from an approaching sightline, checked at the entrance door. And the run is continuous around the detail; a gap at a corner reads as a shadow in an otherwise even band.

Mount into an aluminum profile rather than bare plasterboard. A channel helps dissipate heat, gives a line drywall never quite does, and lets you swap a section later. Nothing makes a channel mandatory. It cuts visible dots without guaranteeing they disappear, an appearance that follows LED density, channel depth, and lens as well. Keeping the two details consistent

The logo and soffit are seen in one glance, so treat them as one specification: same product family, nominal color temperature, and lens type. Two color temperatures behind one desk is the most noticeable error at a reception, and it happens when the signage supplier orders the box and the contractor the soffit.

Put both on the same dimming path if either is dimmed, and verify the whole chain, strip to driver to controller, including minimum and maximum load. Keep control methods separate, since a phase cut wall dimmer belongs on the same circuit as a low voltage controller only where documentation says so.

Power, heat, and access

Take the soffit and logo runs together, apply the published watts per foot across the installed length, and pick a driver with at least 20 percent current headroom (verify the current guidance). Voltage matches exactly, 24V tape on a 24V driver, and both runs return in parallel, not looped in series.

Strips give off heat while lit, and a sealed logo box with no ventilation is the lobby's warmest place. Put the driver outside it, in a ceiling void or a cabinet with an access panel. Hardwired drivers, junction boxes, and fixed wall controls need a licensed electrician working under the manufacturer instructions, local code, and the NEC where it applies.

What usually goes wrong at a front desk

The three repeats: a logo box built at whatever depth the joiner had spare, so the tape prints through the face; a soffit run stopped short of a corner; and a driver sealed behind a plastered soffit with no access panel.

The detail worth stealing from shopfitters: agree the cavity depth on a mock-up before the box is fabricated, and write that setback on the joinery drawing. Depth is fixed once the box is built.
