Cut to fit, for most interior work. A finished opening is rarely the dimension that was drawn, and a length that arrives already trimmed has nothing left to give when those two numbers disagree. Cut to fit or order exact lengths turns on one thing: whether the dimension you are working to already exists as built fabric. An ordered length earns its place when the product is sealed for damp or wet use, when the same dimension repeats across many identical pieces, or when nobody on site can reconnect a cut end. What cutting on site is actually for

Field cutting exists to absorb tolerance. Cabinet runs creep. Coves pick up thickness when drywall returns get skimmed. Trimming on the day puts the strip where the finish work ended up.

Dry fit before the blade comes out. Slide the strip into the channel, mark it against the real stop rather than the drawing, then cut at the nearest designated point on the short side of that mark. A fraction short disappears under an end cap. A fraction long will not seat, and the remedy is a second cut that leaves you a full interval short.

Cut to fit or order exact lengths: three checks that settle it

Is the substrate built and measurable today, or are you reading a drawing? Can this product be field cut, and if it is sealed, can the cut end be closed for that location? Does the same length repeat?

If the substrate is not built, cut to fit and stop deliberating. If the run is sealed and lives outdoors or in a wet area, lean toward an ordered length and keep the factory ends intact. If the length repeats and the dimension is already confirmed on site, ordering to it gives the tidier build. Everything else, cut to fit.

Where an ordered length is the stronger call

Sealed products change the arithmetic. Cutting one opens the factory sealing at that end, and the exposed end has to be closed again to suit where the run lives. Suitability is a whole system matter: the exact IP rating, the connections and end seals, the driver's enclosure and the way it is installed all have to fit the location and local code, as our guide to IP ratings sets out.

Repetition is the other clear case. Fourteen display shelves at one specified length are a repeated operation, and repeated tape work accumulates errors. Whether an item is supplied on fixed reel lengths or made to a stated length varies by product, so read the listing.

The cut interval decides how fine your adjustment can be

Many LED strips can be cut at designated points and reconnected with compatible connectors or soldering, depending on the product. Cut interval, pad layout, tape width and whether a strip is intended to be field cut at all are properties of that item, not of LED strip in general, so read them on the page in front of you. The interval sets your smallest step, so a coarse one delivers the finished length in bigger increments and you plan where the shortfall lands, ideally at a return or behind a stile. What a field cut asks of the rest of the chain

Cutting changes installed footage, and the power plan rests on installed footage. Total the published watts per foot against the length you actually install, add current headroom, currently at least 20 percent (verify both figures), and pick a supply from the LED driver range rated above it. Nothing in the chain crosses voltages: 24V tape wants a 24V driver and 24V control gear, while 12V tape stays on 12V end to end. Several lengths on one supply branch out in parallel, never chained end to end in series.

At a cut end, a solderless strip to wire connector with a 72 inch lead avoids soldering, provided the tape width and pad layout match what it accepts (verify the compatible widths). A hardwired supply or a junction box is work for a licensed electrician: local code, the NEC and the manufacturer instructions govern it, the breaker goes off before anyone opens anything, and nobody puts a probe on a live line voltage connection.

The mistake that spoils either approach

Ordering to a drawing dimension is the one people repeat. A drawing is a proposal; the building is the fact. Confirm the length against the built condition with a tape before anything is committed.

The cutting version is trimming the end that carried a factory lead, then finding the fresh end presents a pad arrangement the connector on hand does not suit. Look at both ends before either gets shortened.
