Spread the supplies when the runs are spread out
Put a run in the hall, another on the stairs and a third in a bedroom. One central driver can feed all three, but each run then needs a low voltage cable pulled back to it, sized for the trip. On long pulls that is heavier cable than you would need locally.
Several small drivers also isolate failures. If one unit stops, one area goes dark and the rest carries on. Each area can be switched or dimmed on its own, and you can add an area later without resizing what is installed.
Cable distance is the variable that flips it
One rule of thumb carries most jobs: the further the runs sit from each other, the more clearly several small drivers win. Voltage lost in a long feed is voltage the tape never sees.
How far a driver can sit from the strip covers what governs that distance. If you can reach every run with a short cable, consolidate. If not, put the power near the load.
Three questions that settle one big driver or several small ones
Ask them in this order.
Do all the runs switch and dim together? If yes, one driver is a strong candidate. If different areas need different levels at once, you are heading toward separate drivers or a multi zone controller.
Can one accessible, ventilated location reach every run with a reasonable cable? If yes, consolidate. If a run needs a long pull through finished construction, give it local power.
Would losing all of it at once be a problem? A display shelf, no. A stair run or a garage that is somebody's only light source, yes.
Wiring either layout
The rules do not change with driver count. Constant voltage runs branch out from a driver in parallel, never chained in series, and the branches added together stay inside that driver's published rating. Voltage matches through the whole chain, so a 24V strip needs a 24V driver and a 24V controller, while 12V tape needs 12V throughout.
Where the unit is allowed to sit
Placement matters as much as the unit. A plug-in supply can sit in a cabinet near a receptacle. A direct-wire or junction box unit goes where an electrician can terminate it properly. Hardwired drivers, junction boxes and any line voltage termination are a licensed electrician's work, done to the manufacturer instructions, local code and the NEC. That work starts with the supply circuit switched off at the panel and confirmed de-energized, never with a live conductor.
What neither layout guarantees
Consolidating does not make an install fragile, and splitting does not make it durable. Several small drivers spread the risk rather than shrink it: more units can fail, but each failure takes down a smaller share of the installation, and no published figure says one arrangement outlasts the other. Drivers and strips both give off heat in normal use, so either way the unit needs its stated clearance and air around it.
Judge them on this job: cable length, control, access and how much goes dark at once.
