LED connector pins by color type
Here is the usual mapping, with the reminder that it depends on the specific strip (verify your strip's conductor count on its product page before you rely on it).
- 2-pin, single color. One positive and one negative conductor, for static white or single-color strips run at one shade and brightness.
- 3-pin, addressable. Power, ground, and a data line, for addressable strips where segments can be controlled individually. The third contact carries data, not a second color, which is why the count is three rather than four.
- 4-pin, RGB. A shared conductor plus red, green, and blue channels, so the run can mix colors.
- 5-pin, RGBW. RGB plus a dedicated white channel, adding one conductor, for strips that combine color mixing with a true white.
- 6-pin, RGB plus tunable white. RGB plus warm and cool white channels for adjustable color temperature alongside color.
Count the pads at your strip's cut point and match the connector to that number. A strip with four pads needs a 4-pin connector even if the packaging says otherwise; six pads needs a 6-pin. How to choose the right connector
Start at the strip, not the connector. Read the conductor count from the product page or count the pads at a cut point, then pick a connector with the same number of pins. Then check the strip's width and pad spacing: solderless connectors are built for a given width and pad pattern, so a 4-pin part for one width will not seat on a wider strip.

An installer tip: before ordering, photograph your strip's cut point next to a ruler. It shows the pad count and width at once, which is what you need to pick the connector correctly the first time.
Wiring, polarity, and power
Pin count aside, the join only works if the conductors line up end to end. Keep polarity consistent, and on multi-channel strips keep each color and data line in the same order both sides. A crossed channel shows up as a wrong color or a dead section past the join.
When a layout branches, wire constant-voltage strips in parallel back to the driver rather than in series, and stay within the driver's rated capacity. Match the supply voltage: a 24V strip needs a 24V supply, a 12V strip needs a 12V supply, and you never cross them. On addressable and multi-channel strips, the controller has to suit the strip's protocol too, so confirm compatibility before relying on smooth control.
Electrical safety
Choosing and seating a connector is low-voltage work at the strip. The supply side is not. Follow the strip and driver instructions, and leave hardwired driver connections, junction boxes, wall dimmers, and any line-voltage work to a qualified electrician where local code requires it.
