Think of the chain in order, because power and signal flow through it in order. The driver converts 120V AC to the low-voltage DC the strip uses, either 12V or 24V. What the app actually controls

An app is only as capable as the controller behind it, so read the product page rather than assuming. Do not stack a smart controller with a wall dimmer

A smart controller is a low-voltage control method that expects clean DC from its driver. A phase-cut wall dimmer chops the AC line voltage feeding the driver. Running both on the same circuit is a common mistake, and unless the system documentation specifically permits it, you should not combine them, because the chopped AC feed can disrupt the smart controller. Choose one control method per run. When your project involves line-voltage wiring, a hardwired driver, or a wall device, follow the manufacturer instructions and local electrical code, and bring in a licensed electrician when line-voltage work is involved. Low-voltage guidance never authorizes unqualified line-voltage work.

Common mistakes to avoid

The recurring problems are buying a smart controller rated for fewer channels than the strip uses, placing the WiFi controller inside a metal enclosure that weakens the signal, and skipping the voltage check between the driver and the strip. Set up the app and pair the controller before you seal anything into a channel, so you can confirm it responds.
